JDM STi Electronic Folding Mirror Install

Finally knocked off yet another JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) modification on my car.

What is this? In Japan, the Impreza WRX/STi's are fit with Electric Folding Mirrors. All Impreza Mirrors will fold in streamline with the body of the car. This enables for safe parking as parking spots in Japan are TIGHT. Here in the states, the Impreza mirrors fold, but we have to get out of the car and physically push the mirrors into place.  Well in Japan on the STi's, it's all done with the click of one button!

Where to find? I found a friend locally who had crate imported a couple of WRX front clips for an engine conversion.  Off of the 2nd car, he was selling these folding mirrors... and they were already painted Black Diamond Pearl... was that a total sign or what!?!?!  Boo just had to have them  So I bought them (thanks Corky!!)  These are very very hard to find, you can try a Japan crate importer or even Ebay.

Tools I recommend:

wire strippers

wire connectors

wiring (I used 20ga insulated marine wire)

Installation:

My very talented friend Mike did the wiring (he's a professional and I DO NOT WIRE) he talked me through exactly what was taking place.

  • First we plugged the JDM (Japan) switch into the OE location

  • Connected it and what do you know? the stock mirrors worked fine, meaning we could aim them up/down - left/right - with NO modifications to the switches or wiring harness

  • In studying the switches, the JDM switch had 2 extra prongs (see photo labelled Description #1) on the mirror end, and 2 extra wires on the switch end... okay? so pretty elementary... run wire from the harness of the JDM mirrors, to the JDM switch extra wires

  • Removed the USDM (US SPEC) and JDM switch wiring from their cases - (See photo labelled "Description #2)" - idea here is to use the USDM wires that are already in existence and then add to them the 2 additional wires that needed to be run to the mirror - meaning removed them from the original JDM extra plug connector and inserted them into the USDM plug connector

  • Reason for this is that the STi JDM switch had completely different coloring on the wiring - and this step saved tons of work and time  - use the stock switch wiring to move the mirror glass up / down and back/forth.... then wire in only the additional 2 wires to make the mirrors themselves fold in/out

  • From this point Mike ran the wires from both mirrors to the switch and connected them parallel to the wires installed in the plug

  • Wiring used for this modification was: 20ga. 2-wire insulated marine wiring

Well here they are... Version 4 GF8 Mirrors

Comparison of U.S. Factory and Japan Factory switches

Switches are nearly identical.. both even made by Nissan  (look closely )

removed center console, exposed wiring which is not plug and play, but nearly so

wiring is nearly identical - plugged the Japan switch into place and with no modifications, the mirrors could be aimed

The 2 extra wires off to the side are used to control the fold/unfold - these needed to be wired in to make the mirrors work.

The rest of the switch again, was plug n play

Harness end from the Mirrors themselves - Again, nearly identical, just a couple of extra prongs which needed to be wired in

splicing in wiring

Running through the door, under dash, then up and out of the center console to the mirror switch

Installed and nearly functioning...

done!
